something about music

I have decided that I shall brave dangerous territory with this blog and talk about music. Any input or suggestions (especially suggestions) are welcome but this will mostly be my own explorations into the playing field of audiophilia; I don’t feel that I have to defend my taste to anyone but I do love arguing (any potential argument is over as soon as Godwin’s Law is invoked) so any input is welcome.

This weekend I saw the movie Juno. I didn’t know what it was I was going to see since I don’t watch television and had not seen any previews for the movie but I was told I would enjoy it. I did. The movie is charming and sardonically funny but my main source of enjoyment was from the sound track which was actually quite phenomenal. During the movie I was sure that most of the songs were done by the now broken up band Moldy Peaches but I didn’t know any of the songs. I thought I was proven right when the love interest in the movie (George Michael from arrested development; I don’t know his real name) starts strumming ‘Anyone Else but you’ on his guitar- a song by the Moldy Peaches. (And the song is later sung by the then romantically entangled costars of the movie at the happy ending.) After some brief research on the internets I found out that most of the songs are, in fact, done by ex- Moldy Peach Kimya Dawson. The sound track is given a bit more depth with the melodic sounds of Mott The Hoople and the lazy, laid back feel of Sea Of Love by Cat Power. It is further rounded out with songs by the Kinks, the Velvet Underground, Buddy Holly, Belle & Sebastian, Sonic Youth and the Carpenters.

While the movie does recieve passing grades, the soundtrack gets flying colors. I was not expecting such sophisticated soundtrack at a movie that has been marketed (I assume) to high school students. And I suggest anyone pick it up especially anyone who liked the moldy peaches (Or anyone who wants to sample some of the unusual b-sides presented by some of the other bands.)

abridged

So, I have decided to start a blog; it seems like all the cool kids are doing it these days. Also, it may be a valuable distraction from work.

So since this is the first entry it might as well be a catch up on where I am in life right now. I recently graduated and am currently employed by a large, well-known, financial institution as a collections agent. The fact that there are chapters in the bible devoted to the condemning of the type of work I do is dear to me. But, in all honesty I am enjoying my job. The work is challenging and I am empowered to make real decisions that effect real people but, simultaneously, it can also be trying and more then a little draining.

I moved not to long ago. I now have a quite nice but very poorly decorated apartment. Yesterday, by a dumpster, I found a rather terrible impressionist painting of a mountain-scape and log cabin. This painting now resides on the wall beside my bed; generally, I regard this addition as an improvement. The new place is in a great location: 20 minutes transit from work, 20 minutes from Jennn and Ryan’s, 20 minutes from downtown. It is in quite the nexus.

In the social and career sectors of my life I don’t know if I have ever been doing better. As hackneyed as it sounds, I’m as happy as I have ever been. I like what I’m doing, I like where I am, and I love my friends, I have attainable goals and a big trip in the works. The only thing that is lacking is a ‘significant other’ and, while it would be nice to be excited about someone again, it isn’t a lack that I feel as profoundly as I have before.
